this evening. the president is sending the first lady there today and joe biden on thursday. i want to put up a quote from my friend rory cooper who said "the des moines register" enl dorised carter, mondale, gore and couldn't endorse another four years of obama. wow. you see folks on the left dismissing the value of this. on the right they'll make a big deal about it. i came upon a fun study from 2008. brown university economists found that when moderate papers endorse they're seen as mort credible. when a partisan paper does it, not so much. when the chicago sun times and "denver post" endorsed kerry and bush, the study found 3% of readers switched voting allegiance. they flipped their allegiances in 2000. i have to say, i think an interesting number that matters is when you compare the endorsement numbers, obama has 34 endorsement from major, significant papers. romney has 27. look at the circulation of those endorsements. obama's total just over 9 million readers. >> 27? >> and mitt romney is at 27 and not 7. his total circulation just under 5 million. so i don't know that this is a scien

in youngstown, ohio, for tomorrow. president clinton and vice president biden will still be there. the president is not going to be there. he has an event tomorrow morning in florida but he's not going to ohio. he's going back to the white house. as for mitt romney, we're watching his campaign very closely. he has a campaign event here in ohio tomorrow morning after this event with paul ryan in a few minutes. and then he goes to wisconsin and iowa, two states that should be protected from hurricane sandy for the time being. but, don, i have to tell you, a lot of this is very interesting to watch because we're all sort of wondering how is this hurricane going to affect the race? which candidate will it affect more? will it affect the president because it will be taking him off the campaign trail. he won't be able to campaign quite as much. or will it make him perhaps appear more presidential because he'll be looking at storm damage and that sort of thing? the romney campaign was asked about that earlier today. they did not want to speculate but the obama campaign is also concerned about it becaus

president joe biden attending rallies in florida and bill clinton is in iowa for the obama campaign, of course. let's bring in the political panel. david goodfriend and rachel smelkin. thank you both for your time. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> i want to get to this poll showing the president still holding on to his lead in ohio, florida and virginia. we know that when you look at national polls, depending on which one, a different picture but it is about the battlegrounds and likely voters here. what do we make of the new polls? >> hurricane sandy introduced a massive unknown in to the final days of the race and that's the first thing. we are not yet seeing that reflikted in the polling. having said that, it looks for the president's team like they're still holding on in ohio. the margins closed there as in other battleground states but that's an all-important state for both campaigns to win this election, mitt romney is almost going to have to win ohio if not he's going to have to run the table everywhere else. this is a good piece of news for the president out of ohio today. vir

in ohio with vice president biden. the republican challenger mitt romney cancelled one of three campaign events on his schedule today. he did still address crowds in ohio and davenport, iowa. he held a town hall with voters in ohio by teleconference. but now romney's slate of events for tomorrow has been cleared. mr. romney's running mate paul ryan held one event in florida before cutting the day short and heading to his home in wisconsin. in terms of hurricane sandy's direct effect on next week's election, chuck todd reports tonight that the fema director craig foou gait has told states if they incur extra costs because of the storm, if they have to move polling places or bring in generators for power, should sandy cause elections officials any expensive changes, states and cities will be reimbursed for those costs by the federal disaster relief, ev if one doesn't believe in that sort of thing. this is not a time for ideology. let's bring in michelle franzen in battery park in lower manhattan. everybody has been keeping an eye on the storm surge and wondering how high the water is going
